Dearly was built so the most private parts of your life never have to leave your iPhone. This page explains, in plain language, exactly what that means.
What stays on your device
- Voice recordings.When you record a memory, the audio file is saved to your iPhone's local storage. It is never uploaded.
- Transcripts.Speech-to-text is performed on-device by Apple's Speech framework. The resulting transcript is stored locally with the rest of your memory.
- Summaries and titles.When available, Dearly uses Apple Intelligence (Apple's on-device foundation models) to shape your recording into a structured memory. This processing happens on your iPhone. No prompt or output is sent to any third party.
- Cover photos.If you choose to add a cover photo to a memory, Dearly copies the image into the app's private file storage on your device.
- Settings and preferences. Stored on-device.
What we do not collect
- No account, sign-up, or login.
- No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting SDKs, or advertising identifiers.
- No location data.
- No contacts, calendar, or other personal data outside of the permissions you grant.
- No third-party trackers, no SDKs that collect data on our behalf.
Permissions Dearly may ask for
- Microphone. Required to record your voice. Audio is captured only while you are actively recording a memory and is saved to local storage.
- Speech recognition.Used by Apple's on-device Speech framework to transcribe your recording. Transcription is performed on your iPhone.
- Photo library. Optional. Used only when you choose a cover image for a memory. Dearly accesses only the images you pick.
Data deletion
Because your memories live only on your device, you control deletion completely:
- Delete an individual memory from inside the app.
- Delete the Dearly app from your iPhone to remove all of its local data, including audio files, transcripts, and settings.
Children's privacy
Dearly is rated 4+ and does not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
Backups
If you have iCloud Backup or encrypted local Mac backups enabled for your iPhone, Apple may include Dearly's app data in those backups. This backup behavior is governed by Apple, not by Dearly. We do not have access to those backups.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change how the app handles your data, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date below. Because the app does not connect to any servers, you can also verify our claims by inspecting the app's behavior — for example, by watching your network activity while using Dearly.
